The Manitowoc County Discovery Farms Project Area is the only multi-farm venture in the state. Water monitoring equipment was installed in Fall 2004. After two years of baseline data collection, another three to five years of research will be conducted. Incorporating both a dairy grazing and a traditional free-stall dairy operation, the project seeks to uncover the sources of sediment, nutrients, and other non-point pollutants that may impair the surface waters of Manitowoc County. A major focus of the research, designed to evaluate and improve Best Management Practices, will be the nutrient management challenges of farming the dense clay soils of southern Manitowoc County including the effects of tile lines. Material Presented at the 28th Annual Wisconsin Lakes Convention, April 2006
