Overview The Jenni-O Turkey Store operates 56 turkey farms over eight counties in northwestern Wisconsin. These farms generate approxiamately 135,000 tons of turkey manure per year. The manure is sold as fertilizer through the company's Soil Enrichment Program. One operational component of this fertillizer program is a practice called "headland stacking". This refers to the temporary storage of turkey manure on crop field edges until it can be land spread as a fertilizer. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) has required the Jenni-O Turkey Store to evaluate whether headland manure stacks impact groundwater or have significant surface runoff. Discovery Farms, along with other University of Wisconsin programs and the US Geologic Survey, is conducting a series of experiments to determine the environmental impacts of headland stacking.
