In 2016, UW Discovery Farms added 84 fields to its Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) database, increasing the total to 121 fields in six regions of Wisconsin.

Key points include:

  • More N does not always equal more yield.
  • Do not let efficiency suffer because of multiple N sources.
  • Decrease N supplied to account for the rotational benefit of alfalfa and soybeans. This preserves yield while increasing NUE.
  • Corn silage fields in no-till systems were more efficient than those in tillage systems.
