This publication shares results from three years on Nitrogen Use Efficiency measurements in Wisconsin.

In 2015-2017 UW Discovery Farms monitored Nitrogen Use Efficiency of 128 grain fields and 85 silage fields, with management practices that include a variety of N sources, cover crop usage, tillage practices, and crop rotations.

Key points include:

  • More N does not always equal more yield
  • We measure NUE using Partial Factor Productivity (PFP)
  • Wisconsin-specific benchmarks for NUE allow farms to analyze and adjust farm management
  • In 2017, variable yields influenced NUE more than previous years though average NUE remained constant
