Equipment & Cover Crop Field Day

Release date: 8/5/2016

September 1st Field Day to focus on manure equipment and cover crops.

Pigeon Falls, WI; July 28th, 2016-  After working with farmers on water quality in the Cashton area for 6 years, UW Discovery Farms knows what it takes to minimize soil and nutrient loss.  On September 1st from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm, the program, which is part of UW-Extension, will host a field day on the Brueggen Farm located between Cashton and Westby. The evening event will focus on manure injection equipment, no-till implements, and cover crop seeding strategies that are well suited to the area’s landscape. These promising tools have lots of potential benefits and can fit in well with local farming systems. The field day will bring together farmers, cover crop and implement industry representatives, and University of Wisconsin researchers.
Considering cover crops but not sure how to plant them in time? In June, winter wheat, tillage radish, and crimson clover provided by LaCrosse Seed were interseeded into corn on the Brueggen Farm. Come hear from Dan Smith of University of Wisconsin about his research focused on the yield impacts of interseeding cover crops into corn. Craig Wanzek, from LaCrosse Seed, will be on hand to answer questions and talk about what cover crop plant species fly off their shelves.
Want to limit soil disturbance but still need to incorporate manure? A Bazooka Farmstar manure injector and other implements that limit soil disturbance will be on site. Doug Szemborksi, with Bazooka Farmstar, will be available to answer questions, explain the tool, and schedule another time to meet with interested area farmers to have an on-farm demonstration.
This is a great opportunity for farmers curious about cover crops, interseeding, and equipment that limits soil disturbance. Come grab a root beer float, connect with experts, and check out how the cover crops are performing beneath the corn.
The field day is free of charge and includes an evening meal and root beer float. CEUs will be available. Brueggen Farm is located at S 748 Clinton Ridge Road, Westby, WI 54667. An RSVP by August 26th is appreciated for meal planning. To RSVP contact Callie Herron at 715.983.5668 or
