UW Discovery Farms Northeast Regional Meeting April 2 in Pulaski, WI will share tile, nitrogen and soil health data

On April 2, 2019, UW Discovery Farms is set to host an educational meeting to share multiple years of data from the Tile, Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Soil Health projects in Wisconsin. This Regional Meeting is FREE and will be held at the American Legion Hall in Pulaski, WI beginning at 12:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. CEUs will be available to certified crop advisors.

Everyone is welcome to attend to hear the latest UW Discovery Farms research that is unique to Wisconsin. Topics on the agenda include:

  • Tile Water Quality Monitoring: UW Discovery Farms is monitoring tile drainage systems in five counties in Northeastern Wisconsin at three levels of intensity. The goal of the project is to understand timing and mechanisms of soil and nutrient loss from tile drainage systems. Aaron Pape, UW Discovery Farms Tile Drainage Education Coordinator will share what the project is showing so far.
  • Nitrogen Use Efficiency: Since 2015, UW Discovery Farms has been tracking nitrogen management to establish Wisconsin-specific benchmarks of NUE. Door and Kewaunee Counties completed their third year of monitoring in 2018. Abby Augarten, UW Discovery Farms Nitrogen Use Efficiency Project Coordinator will share results from these counties as well as statewide benchmarking data.
  • Soil Health: Soil health assessments are used to evaluate how well a soil is functioning. As part of the Tile and NUE Projects, soil health measurements were taken on participating farms. Dr. Matt Ruark from the UW-Madison Soil Science Department will share results from biological assessments of carbon and nitrogen pools in the soil. Dr. Francisco Arriaga and Laura Adams from the UW-Madison Soil Science Department will share findings from physical assessments including aggregate stability and water holding capacity. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to explore the data behind the buzz of soil health.
